Alan B. Shepard, was the first American in space. The seven stamps show two different motifs: Alan Shepard with the Mercury capsule in the background and a similar portrait, whereby the planet Saturn with its rings can be seen here instead of the Mercury capsule. The circulation was 8,000 sentences. Catalog no. 972-78, mint never hinged.
Alan B. Shepard took off on May 5, 1961 on board the Mercury capsule MR-3 for the first American space flight. However, this is not, as with Yuri Gagarin, an orbit around the earth, but a ballistic flight. Shepard reached an altitude of 187 km with his spaceship, which he himself gave the name "Freedom 7". The whole flight took just under 15 minutes.
