Referring to the old kingdom, the modern state of Dahomey was formed in 1960. Whose national territory coincided in parts with the territory of the old kingdom, but in the northern parts extended far beyond that.
The official language of the kingdom was Fon.
In 1975 this state was renamed the People's Republic of Benin.
