The Limburg Cathedral, also called Georgsdom after its patron saint St. Georg, is the cathedral church of the Limburg diocese and towers above the old town of Limburg an der Lahn next to Limburg Castle. The high location on the limestone rock above the Lahn ensures that the cathedral is visible from afar. Today the building is considered to be one of the most accomplished creations of late Romanesque architecture. However, elements of the early Gothic are already evident. This type of architecture is called the Rhenish transition style.
