Margaret Hilda Thatcher was born on October 13, 1925 in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
In 1959, Thatcher was elected to the House of Commons as the Conservative candidate for the Finchley constituency in the London borough of Barnet in the north of the metropolis. In 1961 she won the position of Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Social Insurance. In 1970, Thatcher became Minister of Culture and Science in Edward Heath's cabinet. In the general election of May 3, 1979, Thatcher led the Conservative Party to victory, replacing James Callaghan's Prime Minister.
Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1979 to 1990. She was in office longer than any other prime minister in the 20th century.
She died on April 8, 2013 at the age of 87 from complications from a stroke.
