The US Postal Administration issued these six impressive blocks of stamps on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. They contain faithful new editions of the 16 Columbus stamps produced in intaglio printing from 1892.

Christopher Columbus wanted to find a new sea route to India. On October 11, 1492 the sailor called: "Land !!" The sailors had been traveling for weeks, some had already given up hope of getting anywhere.

But then Christioph Columbus had made it with his three sailing ships: He had discovered the sea route to India.

He believed that at least until the end of his life. In fact, he landed in America and was the first European to enter the country on October 12, 1492.
