On the occasion of the 500th birthday of the theologian and reformer Thomas Müntzer, the GDR minted a 20-mark coin in 1989. It is a silver coin in the minting quality uncirculated. The face of the coin shows a portrait of Thomas Müntzer.
Thomas Müntzer (* around 1489 - 1525) was a priest by profession and initially an admirer of Martin Luther. At the beginning of the Peasant War he distanced himself from Luther. His resistance was directed not only against the clerical authorities ruled by the papacy but also against the world order, which was characterized by estates. Thomas Müntzer campaigned for the violent liberation of the farmers.
