On the 500th birthday of the reformer Martin Luther , the GDR issued a 20-mark commemorative coin in 1983. The coin was minted from 500 silver and shows a portrait of Luther on its face.
Martin Luther (1493-1546) studied theology and worked as a theology professor in Wittenberg. The posting of his theses in 1517 was the prelude to the Reformation - an event that had a decisive influence on world history in politics, religion, culture and society.
The emphasis on the gracious God, his sermons and writings as well as his translation of the Bible, the Luther Bible, changed the society dominated by the Roman Catholic Church in the early modern period.
